About Mat Clothier.

Mat Clothier is an independent advisor, non-executive director, and former founder-CEO with a 25-year career in B2B software.

Mat is best known as the founder and long-time CEO of Cloudhouse, the EIS-backed application compatibility and IT operations software business. Over fifteen years he built Cloudhouse from idea to a £7m revenue international software business, raising successive rounds of EIS investment, navigating complex shareholder dynamics including a hostile investor situation, and negotiating a transformational £20m OEM licence agreement with Amazon Web Services. Prior to Cloudhouse, Mat founded and ran three earlier technology startups, giving him direct experience of the full company lifecycle from formation through scale, institutional investment, and exit.

Mat's technical background is unusually deep for a CEO. He retains hands-on capability in software architecture and engineering, with current depth in cloud platforms, agentic AI, and modern B2B SaaS infrastructure. This combination — operator-level commercial scar tissue and current technical fluency — is the basis of the advisory work he now does.

In May 2026 Mat transitioned out of the Cloudhouse CEO role and into a portfolio career, continuing as a Founder Director on the Cloudhouse board. He now works exclusively with private equity-backed and founder-led software companies in the £5m–£50m revenue range, taking selective non-executive, chair, advisory, and consulting engagements. He has a particular focus on businesses navigating the transition from founder-led to institutional ownership, AI-native product strategy, and cloud platform decisions of strategic significance.

Mat is based in Somerset, works across the UK, and — unusually for a UK-based non-executive — actively welcomes international engagements.
